EC / Maestro 2026 ATM data

EC vs Maestro vs V-Pay — will your home card actually work at a Sparkasse ATM?

Foreign debit cards hit three failure modes in Germany: (1) the terminal accepts Maestro but yours is V-Pay only, (2) the terminal is an old non-NFC model and contactless silently fails, (3) Maestro is being phased out for Mastercard Debit. Pick your home country, card type and ATM — find out if you get cash or a "Vorgang nicht möglich".

Your card & ATM choice

EU + CH cards usually have Maestro / V-Pay; rest are Visa/MC.
Maestro was retired for new cards in 2023; existing cards still work.
Sparkasse: most common, ~16,000 ATMs. Foreign card acceptance rate ~70%.
Older Sparkasse terminals in village squares have lower NFC support.

What this solves

Three failure modes catch visitors in Germany: a card that worked at home gets declined at a Sparkasse ATM because the terminal only reads Maestro (legacy) or V-Pay (newer); contactless fails silently at the ATM because the older outdoor terminal has no NFC reader; and the new Mastercard Debit card (which replaced Maestro for new issuers) is not yet on every German ATM's acceptance list.

The 2026 numbers: Sparkasse accepts foreign Maestro on roughly 65-72% of its ~16,000 ATMs and V-Pay on about 80-85%. Mastercard Debit (post-2023) is now on ~92% of Sparkasse machines. Credit cards work almost everywhere — but with a €5-€7 fee at Reisebank and Sparkasse. The pick of an ATM matters more than the pick of a card.

FAQ

Why does contactless fail silently at some ATMs?

Two reasons: (1) the ATM itself is a pre-2018 outdoor model with no NFC reader — the "tap" symbol is missing from the screen. (2) your card has NFC disabled (some banks default this). The screen prompts for insert-with-PIN but says nothing about contactless. Solution: insert + PIN always works.

Is Maestro dead?

For new cards, yes — Mastercard retired Maestro in 2023 for new issuers; existing Maestro cards keep working. Replacement is Mastercard Debit (different acceptance profile). The phase-out window is 2023-2027. By 2028 most Sparkasse ATMs will only list MC Debit / V-Pay / Credit.

Is V-Pay different from Visa Debit?

Yes. V-Pay is the European-only Visa debit network for chip-and-PIN, designed for the EU market. Visa Debit (the global product) is newer and broader. V-Pay-only cards work at most Sparkasse / Volksbank ATMs but may not work at every terminal outside Germany.

Should I use DKB or a bank card from home?

DKB is a German direct bank — their Visa debit card is fee-free at any Sparkasse, Volksbank and DKB ATM in Germany (in the "Cash Group" + DKB partner network). Visitors without a German bank account fall back to home-bank cards. The biggest avoidable cost is the €5-€7 Reisebank fee on top of home-bank ATM fees.
