ATM 2026 fee data · DCC warning

ATM fee optimizer — pick the right German ATM and avoid the DCC €5 trap.

Not every German ATM costs the same. Sparkasse charges €1.95-€3.95 to foreign cards; Reisebank charges a flat €5-€7.50; DKB is free if you have an account; ING-DiBa is also free for its customers. Worse: the machine may offer to convert your withdrawal to your home currency at a 4-7% markup (DCC) — always decline. Pick your withdrawal amount and home bank to see the cheapest option.

Your withdrawal

Aim for €200-€300 per trip to minimise fee-per-euro.
Customer status: free at own ATMs + partners. Foreign cards: pay fee to ATM bank.
If ATM offers to charge in your home currency — that's DCC, decline.
Reisebank is the only 24/7 option at airports + stations. Higher fee.
Multiple small withdrawals cost more in fees. One large = cheaper.
DCC adds 4-7% hidden markup. Always pick "EUR / Without conversion".

What this solves

Three problems. (1) The German ATM fees are not transparent — the screen says €1.95 only after you've chosen the amount, and €3.95 to €5.50 is the surprise. (2) The DCC trap: the machine offers "convert to USD/GBP at €1 = $1.10", which is 4-7% worse than your card's own FX rate — most visitors accept without realising. (3) Choosing the wrong bank at the wrong time: Reisebank at 02:00 at Frankfurt airport charges €7.50 with a foreign card; the Sparkasse 800m away in the main hall charges €1.95.

This tool ranks every common German bank by your effective fee (own-bank free + foreign fee + DCC surcharge if applicable), and flags if your trip pattern is going to cost you more than necessary.

FAQ

What is DCC and how do I avoid it?

DCC = Dynamic Currency Conversion. The ATM offers to charge your card in your home currency (USD, GBP) instead of EUR. The conversion rate the machine uses is 4-7% worse than the wholesale FX rate. To avoid: always pick "EUR" / "Without conversion" / "Continue in EUR" on the screen — even if your home currency is offered. The DCC markup is hidden in the rate, not the fee.

Is Reisebank always €7.50?

No — €5.00 to €7.50 depending on location and time. Airport and 24/7 Reisebank ATMs are the most expensive. Hauptbahnhof city-centre Reisebank ATMs are cheaper. Reisebank is rarely the best choice unless it's 02:00 and there is no alternative.

Does Revolut / Wise / N26 skip the fee?

Premium Revolut / Wise / N26 Metal cards typically refund ATM fees up to €200-€400/month. Standard tiers have lower or zero allowance. These cards use wholesale FX (no DCC trap) and the fee refund happens within hours. This is often the best deal for short trips.

Should I open a German bank account?

For a trip under 4 weeks, no. DKB and ING offer video-Ident onboarding, but you'll need a German address and tax ID for the long-term account. For a long stay / Au-pair / work: DKB is the cheapest, with fee-free withdrawals at any Sparkasse / Volksbank / DKB ATM and at merchant points via Girocard.
