Your Berlin trip
What this solves
Berlin's transit is deceptively simple: one ticket covers almost everything — U-Bahn, tram, bus, ferry (BVG and S-Bahn). The trouble is choosing the right zone (AB vs ABC), the right ticket type (Kurzstrecke vs single vs day pass), and the right mode when S-Bahn works perfectly on Tuesday and is replaced by bus on Wednesday.
This decoder avoids the two classic mistakes: paying €3.90 AB when a €2.20 Kurzstrecke covers the trip (or vice versa), and buying a single when a €9.50 Tageskarte is cheaper after the second ride. It also flags the 2026 S-Bahn Stammstrecke closure reality — that the S1/S2/S25/S26 Stadtbahn segment (Hauptbahnhof–Friedrichstraße–Alexanderplatz) is undergoing multi-year renovation with line swaps and replacement buses.
How to read the result
- Recommended mode — the cheapest / most reliable mode for your origin–destination pair, factoring in the S-Bahn Stammstrecke renovation status.
- Ticket — Kurzstrecke (€2.20, 3 stops bus/tram or 3 U/S stations, one-way, no return), Einzel AB (€3.90, anywhere in AB zone), Einzel ABC (€4.70, also covers outer C like Potsdam), or Tageskarte (unlimited rides until 3 AM next day).
- Price (single) — the cheapest one-trip price for one adult. For two trips the same day, AB-Tageskarte €9.50 wins.
- Warning panel — flags the S-Bahn Stammstrecke closure, replacement bus routes, and the night-network Friday/Saturday detail.
Limitations
- Does not model exact minute timing. A given S-Bahn line might be 6 min faster than a given U-Bahn; the tool picks the typical good-enough answer.
- Stammstrecke renovation closures are based on 2026 published S-Bahn Berlin information. Last-minute line swaps are common — verify on the day.
- Does not include the BVG-Fahraoute 24-Stunden surcharge (€2 if bought from a BVG counter vs €0 from the machine or BVG app).
- Does not include tourist-only options like the Berlin Welcome Card, which bundles transit + museum discounts.
- Does not account for BVG replacement bus service when an U-Bahn segment is closed for trackwork.
- Children under 6 ride free; ages 6-14 ride free with a parent in some tariffs. The tool assumes adult fare.
FAQ
What is the S-Bahn Stammstrecke and why does it keep closing?
The Stammstrecke is the central S-Bahn corridor through Berlin: Hauptbahnhof – Friedrichstraße – Alexanderplatz – Ostbahnhof – Warschauer Straße. It is one of the busiest commuter rail corridors in Europe and is undergoing a multi-year renovation (planned 2025-2032). Expect weekend closures and weekday night-time single-track operation. Replacement buses (SEV) run on adjacent streets. Plan for +15-25 min transfer delay.
Does the BVG ticket also cover S-Bahn?
Yes — within the same zone. An AB Einzelfahrschein bought from a BVG machine is also valid on S-Bahn in AB territory, and vice versa. They are part of the same VBB tariff system (Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg).
When does the U-Bahn night service run?
U1-U9 run all night every day of the week (15-minute frequency overnight). U5, U6, U7, U8 are the busiest. U-Bahn night is more reliable than S-B night nights. Trams 4, 5, 6, 8 have night service Friday/Saturday with regular night-network taxis (VBB taxi at €4.50 flat per trip).
What if I am fined with the wrong ticket?
€60 if you have no ticket at all. €10 surcharge if you buy on the bus. Buying the ticket in the BVG App (or DB Navigator, sold as VBB) lets you validate retroactively if you get caught — but only until the inspector arrives, not after. Pay €60 immediately if you have no ticket; the receipt is the right to dispute within 14 days.
