Schwarzwald 2026 reference · DAV/DWD

Schwarzwald hike grade — pick a trail that matches your legs.

The Schwarzwald's four main long-distance trails look similar on the map but differ hugely in Höhenmeter and trail surface. Westweg (Pforzheim–Basel) is the classic 285 km, Schluchtensteig is a steeper gorge route, Murgleiter follows the Murg valley, and Baiersbronner Sattelweg is a one-day option. This tool gives you an honest per-stage distance and time — adjusted for fitness, season and the marked-elevation reality.

What this solves

Every Schwarzwald guidebook lists the trails with pretty marketing names — "the classic", "the gorge trail", "the valley trail" — and a single distance number. None of them tell you that the Westweg's Hornisgrinde stage climbs 800m on a hot August afternoon, or that the Murgleiter averages 600m per stage with shorter daily distances. The result: a couple from Hamburg books the Westweg "for 7 days", quits at stage 5 with knee pain, and writes a TripAdvisor review blaming the trail.

This tool sizes the trail to you, not to the brochure. It uses Naismith's rule (5 km/h on flat + 1 hour per 600m of ascent, divided by a fitness multiplier) and adds a 25% buffer for rest stops, photos and reorientation. That buffer is the difference between finishing tired and finishing hurt.

FAQ

Is the Westweg signposted end-to-end?

Yes — black diamond on yellow. Schwarzwaldverein maintains the marking. A few detours have been added since 2024 around Hornisgrinde and Belchen; check the Schwarzwaldverein stage-by-stage PDF before each year.

Can I do the Westweg in winter?

Only with proper alpine equipment above 900m (Feldberg, Schauinsland, Belchen). Sections close for wildlife protection in Feb–Mar. The Murgleiter and Baiersbronner Sattelweg are usually fine until the first heavy snowfall.

Do I need a DAV membership?

Not for Schwarzwald — these trails are public and free. DAV helps with hut discounts in the Alps, not the Schwarzwald. Schwarzwaldverein membership (~€55/year) gets you the printed tour guide and cheaper hut stays on some stretches.

Where can I check the live weather window?

Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) Bergwetter for Schwarzwald/Schwarzwald-Mitte at dwd.de is the authoritative source. Avoid Ortenauer Wetter because it is regional-only. For lightning, the DWD Warn-App pushes 30-min warnings for the Feldberg region.

About this tool

This calculator was built to replace the brochure-only distances with a realistic per-stage time for the four Schwarzwald long-distance trails. It uses 2026 Schwarzwaldverein stage sheets, Naismith's rule and a fitness + season modifier. Confirm stage-by-stage details and current closures on schwarzwaldverein.de before you go.
