What this solves
The Umweltzone sticker system has been in place since 2008. There are three sticker colours (red, yellow, green) corresponding to emissions classes. Since January 2021, only the green sticker is valid — the red and yellow ones are historical. So in 2026, the only decision is: do I have a green sticker on the car, or do I have to get one?
For most Euro 6 rentals (Sixt's standard fleet) and every EV (which is automatically exempt), the answer is "you're fine, nothing to buy". For older rentals, especially older diesel, you may need to ask the rental company to install a green sticker at pickup. If you forgot, the TÜV / DEKRA charges €5 to issue one — but only if your vehicle is registered as Euro 4 or cleaner.
The second question is about vignettes. Germany abolished the planned Autobahn-Vignette in 2019 after a court-failed Pflichtmitglied (LKW-Maut) ruling, so for cars there is no road-toll sticker. Only Austria (€9.90 for 10 days, €39.80 for a year for cars), Switzerland (CHF 40 for a year for cars), and Czech Republic (€12 for 10 days) sell vignettes.
How to read the result
- Required sticker — green is the only legal colour in 2026. Red and yellow are obsolete.
- Fine if violated — €80 is the entry-fee-only fine. Driving without a sticker triggers an administrative fee of €80 plus a €20-€30 administrative surcharge on the rental company's invoice.
- Already on vehicle? — Yes if the vehicle was registered after Jan 2004 or has had its emissions officially re-classified. Modern rentals are always "yes".
- Buy at TÜV? — €5 cost at any TÜV / DEKRA / KÜS / GTÜ inspection station. Bring the Fahrzeugschein (Zulu Vat-Brief) so they can issue the sticker based on the emissions class.
- EV exemption — Electric vehicles do not need a sticker at all (you may still mount a green one for peace of mind).
Limitations
- Stuttgart has additional Feinstaub-Alarm days when diesel Euro 5 and below are temporarily banned.
- Berlin's cameras are accurate but slow; some Autobahn-to-zone transitions don't have signage.
- Munich and Hamburg run Umweltzone Diesel-Fahrverbote — a separate diesel-only ban layer.
- Hybrid PHEVs with less than 50 km electric-only range may not get the green sticker.
- Foreign plates from outside the EU sometimes require a COC-document compliance copy.
- Rental companies can refuse to install a sticker if the vehicle's emissions are too dirty (e.g. Euro 3 diesel).
FAQ
Is there a Germany vignette for cars?
No. Germany never implemented a car PKE-vignette. The LKW-Maut (truck toll) applies only to vehicles >7.5t. You only need to buy a vignette if you cross into Austria, Switzerland or the Czech Republic.
What about hybrid plug-ins?
PHEVs with 50+ km of electric-only range (per WLTP) qualify for the green sticker if Euro 6. Older PHEVs and HEVs without the WLTP certification get the yellow sticker.
Does my rental car already have a sticker?
Yes if it's Euro 6 (any fuel) or Euro 5 petrol. Look for the green circular sticker on the inside of the windscreen, top-right corner. Rental companies almost always have it installed.
Can I get a sticker mailed to me?
Yes, TÜV Sued sells them online for €5 + shipping. You need to upload the vehicle registration document (Zulu Vat-Behaelterbrief). The sticker arrives by post in 5-7 working days.
